Los Norteños

NW Latino Writers Group  Seattle Washington

About Us...

Vision:

To create a community where both seasoned and emerging writers work together to  hone and promote their craft.

Los Norteños Goals:

To produce entertaining events, publications and web-based communications.

To provide a forum for writers to learn from one another and share resources.

To sustain a long-standing organization by enlisting volunteers to assist with administrative duties, event production as well as coaching, mentoring, and teaching.

Los Norteños has produced and performed annual readings at Elliott Bay Book Company, Richard Hugo House and at regional arts events, often in celebration of Latino holidays. There have also been specially created events such as Latinos on Love and a Peace Show to benefit Real Change, a program to support homeless people.

The most recent performances by Los Norteños have been part of collaboration with the Seattle Public Library. On November 3, 2007, the program was entitled Los Espiritus Entre Nosotros/ The Spirits Among Us. On June 16, 2007 the program was Palabras y Voces Picantes II/Spicy Words & Voices II. In November of 2006, LN performed in a Day of the Dead reading, part of a month-long celebration of Hispanic Heritage presented by the Library. Other celebration authors featured  were Maria de Lourdes Victoria Muguira, Javier Amaya and Isabel Allende.

Most recently we performed a Dia de los Muertos/Day of the Dead reading on Sunday November 2, 2008 at Elliott Bay Books in Pioneer Square. Listen to audio highlight samples on DDLM Pics 2 page.

Financial support for the group has included Allied Arts, Artists Trust, Ford Foundation, Gang Prevention Services, Wallace Foundation and the City of Seattle Mayor's Office and smART Ventures.

The  continuing presence of Los Norteños on the literary scene in the Pacific Northwest has depended mostly on the volunteer efforts of members.

In February 2008, members elected new leadership for the group: co-chairpersons, Catalina Cantu and Heidi Hanson, for a term of two years. Former coordinator, Raul Sanchez will continue as active member and consultant.
